I write this in full awareness of how dramatic it may sound, but I don’t care because it’s true - I have found my perfect pair of earrings in Zayla’s Crescent Studs. They are the answer to my frequent prayer to the jewelry gods: “For the love of all things holy, PLEASE design some stud earrings that are actually comfortable to wear, yet easy to put on.” Shouldn’t be too much to ask, right?
Wrong. Stud earrings are notoriously uncomfortable because of the poking bar that impales the side of your head any time you lay on your side, or wear over-ear headphones. This isn’t a big deal if you only plan to wear your earrings for one day, and swap them out frequently.
For me, this unfortunately doesn’t work. While I do like to change my jewelry frequently to suit my look or mood, I also find it much more convenient to sleep in my jewelry at night. I’m much less likely to lose my small stud earrings when I’m not taking them off constantly, and it saves me time in the morning to not having to change (or put on) my jewelry if I’m keeping the same look.
Because of this, I have stayed away from stud earrings for the last few years. Chic and modern as they are, comfort and convenience wins for me.
I thought my quest for comfortable studs may have finally concluded when flat back earrings burst on to the jewelry scene a few years ago. Flat backs have been around for ages and are popular in the piercing community because of their comfort - the flat back of the stud (instead of the butterfly back on normal stud earrings) blunts the edge of the stud post so that it no longer pokes your head.
After trying MANY products from different brands (including many from Studs, who popularized this style), I was left underwhelmed. This style of earring is definitely more comfortable, but the earrings are a b*tch to put on!
Flatback earrings come in two types - push pin, and screw top. Screw tops are incredibly difficult to put on because of how small the end pieces are. Push pins are slightly easier, but they’re much less secure, and prone to falling out. I lost more than 5 push pin earrings!
Enter: Zayla Crescents. A genius earring design that now seems so obvious that I can’t believe I didn’t think about it. When I discovered the Bar Crescents through Instagram, I knew I had to give them a try - and at just under $100 for a pair of solid gold earrings, I pulled the trigger immediately.
Zayla Crescents look like a stud earring - their tops sit flat against your lobe with a post that goes through your ear. Yet instead of the blunt, poking end, the post curves around the back of your lobe and hugs into the front. The straight part of the post is just long enough to comfortably go through your piercing, and it’s so comfortable you absolutely forget you’re wearing them.
I've been wearing them for a week straight now and haven't needed to take them off once. I even sleep in them. I have multiple piercings and these pair nicely with my other studs. Bonus points for comfort because they're way better than studs. And bonus points for packaging/fast shipping! - Shannah L.
When I unboxed them the first time (with 10/10 packaging I might add!) I was a little concerned they might not stay on since there is no back holding them in place. I twisted them into place in my second piercing easily, and did as Zayla’s website suggested, and gave the gold a little pinch to tightly cuff my lobe. The earrings were snug, and they maintained this shape!
I went on to battle test them for a full week of 24/7 wear, and they stayed in place. At most, I had to twist them slightly in the mornings when I woke up to have them sit perfectly, but I was never even close to losing one. The fit was perfect!
Moral of this story, I’m obsessed with crescent studs. I went back to Zayla and immediately bought both the Crystal Crescents and the Diamond Drop Crescents, and have been mixing and matching them ever since.
As of writing this, Zayla only offers 3 designs of crescent earrings, but we reached out to the brand and they confirmed that this style has been incredibly popular, and they hope to stock new designs in the future.
Stud earring lovers, you’re welcome! I couldn’t be more happy to say this quest is completed.
