Each year, millions of tons of plastic enter landfills across the world. While many have done as much as they can to limit their use of plastics, they still end up in landfills because there are so many products exclusively sold in plastic packaging; one of these products is toothpaste. Each year, over a billion toothpaste bottles are thrown out, that’s enough to fill the Empire State building fifty times over.
This problem became apparent to Lindsay McCormick, the founder and CEO of Bite, when she was traveling across the US as a television producer. McCormick had originally entered the industry with the goal of working on environmentally-focused documentaries, but quickly became frustrated because all the travel she did for work was causing her to throw hundreds of travel-size toothpaste tubes away. She became disheartened, feeling like she had become a part of the problem she had wanted so badly to fix. So, she founded Bite, a toothpaste company with 100% recyclable and reusable packaging.
They are able to do this because they sell toothpaste tablets, bite-sized capsules that have the same effect and benefits as toothpaste when combined with water in your mouth, but with one added benefit: they don’t have to be stored in a plastic tube. As an added benefit, the chemicals added to commercial toothpaste that improve the user experience, but can be harmful to the body in certain situations, is not present in Bite’s toothpaste. McCormick did this because she only wanted to put ingredients in her body that she trusted. It has had amazing results, as Bite is one of the only gluten-free and vegan toothpastes on the market.
Amazing Product!! And It's Delicious!
I absolutely love Bite! What an amazing way to eliminate plastic. Wish it came a with a bit more bites, as I have a family of 4. But, I'm willing to keep buying in support of plastic free products! Awesomeness
What’s truly impressive about Bite is its sustainability-driven mission. As an avid explorer of nature, McCormick wanted to ensure her company was helping the environment she loves. That’s why Bite uses glass for all of their product packaging, ships their products in packaging made with recycled newspapers, uses fully-recyclable boxes, and sends refills in 100% compostable pouches. That’s right, there is absolutely zero plastic used. They have also done all they can as a company to ensure they keep their carbon footprint minimal. They partnered with MIT to ensure that shipping their products would have a lower total carbon footprint than the traditional brick and mortar store. In order to do this, they may have sacrificed speed, but at less than half the footprint of a rush (same day) ship, the slower shipping times are worth it if you are looking for sustainable toothpaste.
I’ve tried other toothpaste bites and found them lacking. I like this because it has activated charcoal in it which whitens teeth. They dissolve quickly and have a good taste. I will continue getting these for my mouth Hygiene.
Here at The Splendid Shopper, we are inspired by McCormick’s story and her sustainable product. If you are looking for an eco-friendly alternative commercial toothpaste with an inspirational female founder, look no further than Bite!
